Myths & Truths About Domestic Violence

Myth
Domestic Violence only occurs in low-income families

Truth
Domestic violence occurs in 
all kinds of families regardless of socio-economic status

Myth
Anger causes domestic violence

Truth
Domestic violence is not caused by anger.  People who choose violence toward their intimate partners and/or children use anger as an excuse.  Violence is a tactic to gain power and control over a family member, intimate partner, and/or the entire family.

Myth
Communication problems cause domestic violence.  “If I could communicate better,” or “If she would just communicate with me.”

Truth
Abusers communicate very
well both in actions and in words.  They send very clear and definite messages to their families.

Myth
Alcohol/drug use or abuse causes domestic violence

Truth
Substance abuse can be a part of a larger pattern of those who choose to abuse, but it does not CAUSE the violence.

Myth
Domestic violence is a relationship problem.

Truth
Violence is an act chosen by one individual.  This myth is a common form of victim blaming by implying that the victim is in any way responsible for the violence
.

Myth
Men who grow up in non-violent homes are not  abusive adults.

Truth
74 % of batterers were raised in non-violent homes. Violence is a choice!  It does not matter how he was raised, HE chooses to be abusive.
